Simon Freund – Diplom, 2021 – Akademie der Bildenden Künste München, Professor Hermann Pitz – detail
When I moved to Munich in 2016 it wasn't my intention to study fine arts. In fact I never really intended to study at all. I came to Munich for work. I wanted to earn money to be able to finance my work as a self-taught artist, after being fed up with running my own fashion brand for almost eight years.

Every morning, on my way to work I passed by the Academy of Fine Arts and if there's something like love on first sight for buildings, that's what it was. So every morning I would pass by and think to myself, that I would rather enter the Academy than going to work.

It wasn't until roughly a year later in 2017 that I decided to give it a try and applied to study fine arts in the sculpture class of professor Hermann Pitz. It's important to me to mention his name, as without professor Pitz I wouldn't have dared to apply. He gave me the confidence to apply and unlike other professors believed in me and my work.

Three and a half years later and just one day after my Diplom exhibition, I'm happy to be able to say that I graduated from art school.

I'm not proud of it though, I'm just happy. Happy because despite lots of reasons to be unhappy about my studies I must admit that I've had a good time and that I wouldn't want to miss it. I'm not proud though as I believe that anyone can do anything if you are born under the right circumstances and you put enough effort in it… I'm not saying it's easy to graduate from art school but for me I would say that it would have been harder not to.

Anyway, for once I took the easy road and graduated. As there's no public exhibition you can find my Diplom, suitably titled 'Diplom' on my new website (programmed by Marcello Curto) which will receive lots of new features in the coming weeks or months. Currently, the website still looks pretty much the same though…
I also have a new tool to send my emails finally moving away from MailChimp to MailPoet as my website is now hosted on WordPress.

To learn more about my Diplom I recommend reading this text by Tatjana Schäfer (in German).

As always I'm happy to answer any questions you might have personally via email or phone.

Having graduated means that I receive no monetary support from the German government anymore which is why I can't afford to rent a flat and I'm currently living without a fixed home.

This means that I'm spending a lot of time with my friends who have already regularly hosted me in the past.

This also means that I'm constantly looking for interesting places and kind people to stay with for a few days or weeks. If that's you or you know of such a place (currently I'm living at barac near Mannheim for one month for example) please get in touch via email or phone.

I also would like to take this opportunity to thank all 45 patrons who are currently supporting me with 1€ per month. Your support is very much appreciated and it keeps me motivated to believe in my vision and to stay true to myself, at least most days…

Stay safe and thank you for following my journey
Simon
